Because you would talk about having a clean registry, that doesn’t mean that your registry is dirty in the literal sense. But technically, if you don’t have a clean registry, your registry is dirty because it is filled with a bunch of trash that you no longer need and need to throw away. If you let all the trash build up in your registry you will have problems like error messages, slow bootups, and even computer crashes. Your computer will run more slowly overall than it will with a clean registry.

How to get a Clean Registry

Some people try to go into the registry and clean it up on their own. This is not the recommended way to get a clean registry because there are some things in your registry that your computer needs in order to operate. You should invest in a clean registry program to do the job correctly. However, it is recommended to clean up your unused programs by uninstalling them before you clean the registry because sometimes uninstalled programs will leave fragments behind and when you run a clean registry program it will find them and clean them out. If you wait and uninstall programs after running the clean registry program you may be adding unwanted things back in.

How often you should clean the registry

You should run your clean registry program about once a month with normal computer use. If you use your computer a lot, if you work from home on your computer, play a lot of computer games, or if the whole family shares one computer, then you should use the clean registry program about every other week.

Fixing a Registry Cleaning Boo-Boo

If you make a boo-boo and clean something from the registry that you shouldn’t have, you will know when you suddenly start crashing or getting a lot of error messages right away after running your clean registry program, then you can use Window’s system restore option to go back to before you cleaned the registry and start over.
